"Hymn" is a song performed by Kesha. It serves as the fourth track on Kesha's third album Rainbow. It was released as a promotional single on August 3, 2017.

Background[]

In an interview with Metro the song was described as a "Hymn for the Hymnless," a song for those who just don’t fit in.

This song is dedicated to all the idealistic people around the world who refuse to turn their backs on progress, love and equality whenever they are challenged. It’s dedicated to the people who went out into the streets all over the world to protest against racism, hate and division of any kind. It’s also dedicated to anyone who feels like they are not understood by the world or respected for exactly who they are. It’s a hopeful song about all of these people — which I consider myself one of — and the power that we all have when we all come together.

The audio video for "Hymn" was released on August 3, 2017. It is the only promotional single from the Rainbow era not to have had a full music video posted with the release of the song. However, in the behind the scenes video for "Learn to Let Go", Kesha mentioned that Isaac Ravishankara had directed a music video for "Hymn." Months later, a 15 second long snippet of the music video leaked online. On May 31, 2018, Kesha announced the premiere of the music video on her Instagram account, along with her partnership with the organization United We Dream.

When I attended the Time 100 Gala this past April, I met Cristina Jiménez, co-founder of the largest immigrant youth organization in the country, @UnitedWeDream. I was so moved by what she and her team are doing to empower immigrant youth in our country. They are working to protect and empower hundreds of thousands of DREAMers who came to this country as children and grew up, studied, and worked in the USA, and now face deportation with the scheduled end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Even though DACA is scheduled to end, United We Dream has continued to fight for justice and dignity for immigrants and helps DREAMers apply for protection.

I am partnering up with United We Dream to shine a light on the organization, and I wanted to encourage anyone and everyone to donate even just a moment of your time to learn about what's going on with DACA, donate a dollar if you feel compelled, or simply be open to learning about what's happening to the people behind the statistics. These are stories of people who are currently having their lives, their dreams and their pursuit of happiness in this free country, taken away from them. At my shows, I dedicate my song ‘Hymn’ to DREAMers because I don’t believe that people who came to this country as children should be punished by potentially having their families torn apart if they haven’t done anything wrong. Unfortunately, these young people are immediately at risk of losing their access to higher education, lawful employment, and relief from deportation. As I say in ‘Hymn’, we are all “Dreamers searching for the truth,” and I hope you will stand with me to fight for the DREAMers. Join me and let’s support United We Dream at link in bio. In conjunction with this collaboration, I am also releasing the music video for 'Hymn'. This song is so important to me, and I’ve been holding onto this music video for a while now, but after meeting Cristina, I felt like now was the time to release it to further bring attention to this cause. We are all the same, born into whatever circumstance the universe hands us, and I believe it should be a right to be able to dream big. Watch my music video on @Vevo

Hymn Dreamers

In the music video for "Hymn," Kesha is riding in the backseat of a self-driving car on a deserted highway. She sings the lyrics to "Hymn" and looks up at the sky. It is dusk. The car stops in front of a group of people that are staring at an approaching spaceship. After Kesha gets out of the car to join them, the UFO abducts her car and tries to abduct the crowd beneath it, to no avail. Finally, the spaceship blasts off and a nonchalant Kesha walks down the highway, carless.

Lyrics[]

Even the stars and the moon
Don't shine quite like we do
Dreamers searchin' for the truth
Go on read about us in the news
Pretty reckless pretty wild
Talkin' shit and we'll just smile
Don't you see these fuckin' crowns
If you know what I mean
You on the team

This is a hymn for the hymnless, kids with no religion
Yeah, we keep on sinning, yeah, we keep on singing
Flying down the highway, backseat of the Hyundai
Pull it to the front, let it run, we don't valet
Sorry if you're starstruck, blame it on the stardust
I know that I'm perfect, even though I'm fucked up
Hymn for the hymnless, don't need no forgiveness
'Cause if there's a heaven
Fon't care if we get in
This is a hymn, hymn, hymn
Gor how we live, live, live
This is a hymn, hymn, hymn
For how we live, for how we live

After all we've been through
No we won't stand and salute
So we just ride we just cruise
Livin' like there's nothing left to lose
If we die before we wake
Who we are is no mistake
This is just the way we're made
You know what I mean
You on the team

This is a hymn for the hymnless
Kids with no religion
Yeah, we keep on sinning
Yeah, we keep on singing
Flying down the highway, backseat of the Hyundai
Pull it to the front
Let it run we don't valet
Sorry if you're starstruck
Blame it on the stardust
I know that I'm perfect
Even though I'm fucked up
Hymn for the hymnless
Don't need no forgiveness
'Cause if there's a heaven, don't care if we get in
This is a hymn, hymn, hymn
For how we live, live, live
This is a hymn, hymn, hymn
For how we live, for how we live

This is a hymn for the hymnless
Kids with no religion
Yeah, we keep on sinning
Yeah, we keep on singing
Flying down the highway
Yeah, we do it our way
High as outer space
We don't hear what the rest say
Sorry if you're starstruck
Blame it on the stardust
I know that I'm perfect
Even though I'm fucked up
Hymn for the hymnless
Don't need no forgiveness
'Cause if there's a heaven
Don't care if we get in
This is a hymn, hymn, hymn
For how we live, live, live
This is a hymn, hymn, hymn
For how we live, for how we live
